THE ETHICS OF SPEAKING IN ISLAM

The ethics of speaking should be taught to children as the foundation of character education which can be applied in daily communication. Islam teaches several regulations and ethics of speaking which should be taught by parents and teachers to children since early age. Since communication competence, speaking and expressing feeling to other people politely will influence significantly towards interpersonal intelligence.

Teaching the ethics of speaking will also be useful for growing children’s self confidence in order to be accepted and appreciated in the environment where they interact daily at home and neighbourhood, at the mosque where they pray and learn to read the holy Qur’an, and also at school where they spend a lot of time to study.

Islam teaches us to always speak well and honestly, tell the truth and talk politely particularly to older people. One of the advices given by Luqman to his son which is kept in the Qur’an 31: 19 stated: “And be moderate (or show no insolence) in your walking, and lower your voice. Verily, the harshest of all voices is the braying of the asses.” Therefore we have to speak in appropriate volume and avoid shouting while we are talking to someone else.

In a hadits, prophet Muhammad SAW (peace be upon him) reminded us to always speak goodness or positive things: “Who believe in Allah and the Last Day should say goodness, or (if he/she can’t say goodness) should keep silence.” From the utterance of Prophet Muhammad SAW we know that saying goodness or positive things that make us and other people happy is strongly recommended. Since the impact of positive statement is such a pray that influences the audience’s psychological condition, the children used to hear positive statements will be easily appreciate their selves and others. Otherwise, the children who often listen to negative statement will behave cruelly. To avoid the negative impact of saying evil, prophet Muhammad SAW remind us the urgency of keeping silence. So silence is gold when we can’t say goodness.

THE URGENCY TO MEMORIZE THE QUR’AN

Why should we memorize the Qur’an? Eventhough the mushaf (the book) of Qur’an have been printed in a great amount and easily found, memorizing the Qu’ran is important to open the opportunity in order to achieve the honour from Allah the Almighty. The memorizers of Qur’an are the chosen people to keep the purity of Qur’an from deviation and counterfeiting efforts.

Verily, We, it is We Who have sent down the Dhikr (i.e. the Qur’an) and surely, We will guard it (from corruption) Qur’an 15: 9.

Here are the reasons why must we memorize the Qur’an:

1. The Qur’an is the life manual (manhajul hayah) for the whole mankind

Allah the Almighty stated: “The month of Ramadhan in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for mankind and clear proofs for the guidance and the criterion (between right and wrong)…” Qur’an 2 : 185. Memorizing the Qur’an (Hifzhul Qur’an) is an effort to make Moslems familiar to the utterance of Allah the Almighty (kalamullah) so they will know their religion and holy book well. It is expected that Moslems who know the regulation in the Qur’an, will implement the Islamic value of Qur’an in their daily life.

2. The Qur’an is the spirit for the believers

Allah the Almighty stated: “And thus We have sent to you (O Muhammad) Ruh (a revelation, and a Mercy) of Our Command. You knew not what is the Book, nor what is Faith? But We have made it (this Qur’an) a light wherewith We guide whosoever of Our Slaves We will. And verily, you (O Muhammad) are indeed guiding (manking) to the Straight Path (i.e. Allah’s Religion of Islamic Monotheism)” Qur’an 42: 52.

Sayid Quthub (the figure of Islamic endeavour in Egypt) said: “In the Qur’an there is a life, which can spread, encourage, move, and develop the life in the heart and reality of activity which can be seen.”

3. The Qur’an as a warning

Allah the Almighty stated: “We know best what they say. And you (O Muhammad) are not the one to force them (to Belief). But warn by the Qur’an him who fears My Threat” Qur’an 50:45. For example, Prophet Muhammad’s companion, Umar ibnul Khathab ra. has strong character but he can change to softer hearted while listening to the verse of Qur’an.

4. The Qur’an as the source of natural science

The memorizer of Qur’an is actually the man whose brain full of scientific information. For example, “He has let loose the two seas (the salt and fresh water) meeting together. Between them is a barrier which none of them can transgress” Qur’an 55: 19-20. The Qur’an also discussed some aspects of our life such as economy, accounting, politics, biology, astronomy, medicine, etc.

5. To keep the mutawatir way of Qur’an

According to ulama hadits (Islamic experts in analyzing the utterance of Muhammad), mutawatir means something narrated by a lot of people so it is impossible to make such public lies. Since the past time, The Qur’an is preserved and kept by the memorizer of Qur’an until the end of era (the Dooms day). The Qur’an which is narrated in mutawatir will not be easily changed or forged like the previous Books, Taurat(The Testament) and Injil (The Bible).

6. The Qur’an raises the quality of community

Allah the Almighty explained: “Indeed, We have sent down for you (O mankind) a Book (the Qur’an) in which there is Dhikrukum (your Reminder or an honour for you i.e. honour for the one who follows the teaching of the Qur’an and acts on its teachings) Will you not then understand?” Qur’an 21:10. The Prophet Muhammad SAW said: “The best mankind among you is a man who learn the Qur’an and teach it” (Hadits narrated by Buchary from Utsman bin Affan).

7. To preserve the tradition (sunnah) of Prophet Muhammad SAW

Most of worship activities are related to memorizing the Qur’an. The limited memorizing only on the short surah/chapters will limit us in performing the perfect prayer (sholat). We have to follow the sunnah of Prophet Muhammad SAW in performing sholat (prayer) for examples in prayer of Jum’ah, he usually read al Jum’ah and al Munafiqun besides al A’la and al Ghashiyah. On Friday Morning prayer (Subuh)  he usually read Sajdah, Al Insan or Ar Rum.

8. To keep the believers away from useless activities

Allah the Almighty stated: “Succesful indeed are the belivers. Those who offer their sholat (prayers) with all solemnity and full submissiveness. And those who turn away from al laghwu (dirty, false, evil vain talk, falsehood, and all that Allah has forbidden).” Qur’an 23: 1 – 3. Sometimes, we are unexpectedly trapped in the situation of laghwu. Trip or travel on a bus, train, plane or ship, often offers laghwu performance/song. So, the best solution is reading the Qur’an by memorizing or read the book even while we are trapped in a traffic, the CD of Qur’an can be played in our car.

9. To preserve the culture of salafus shalih (the ancestor Moslem generation)

When we analyzed the history of the ancestor Moslem generation (salafus shalih) we will find the bright life either in knowledge or piety. The greatest attention is focused on the Qur’an. Most of them have memorized the Qur’an at the early age for example Imam Syafi’I memorized the Qur’an when he was 10 years old.

THE RESULT OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S ENDEAVOUR (Part IX)

At the previous article, we have discussed about The Country of Hidayah (The guided Country) as the eighth result of Prophet Muhammad’s endeavour (dakwah). Let’s continue to discuss the next results as follow:

9. Jihad and Freedom

Allah the Almighty stated in the verse of Qur’an : “There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Taghut (anything worshipped other than Allah) and believes in Allah then he has grasped the most trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allah is All-Hearer, All-Knower. Qur’an 2: 256.

Thus is the manifestation of religious freedom for non Moslems who live under the protection of Islamic government. When Khalifah Umar ibnul Khattab conquered Iliya (now Al Quds), he made such a political contract written in 15 H (636 after Christ) which containing: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is protection given by the servant of Allah Umar, Amirul Mukminin (the leader of believers) to the people of Iliya (Al Quds), namely the protection which blessed by Allah to themselves, their churches and their crosses altogether with sects. It is forbidden to break and decrease their church building, It is forbidden to decrease their crosses. It is forbidden to take away their wealth. They are not forced to leave their religion. Who choose to live in Iliya must pay jizyah like the people of Madain (Iraq) and they will live in safe condition under the protection. Who want to leave Iliya and move to other country, they might go with their families and their wealth safely until they arrive to the refuges regions. If they want to come back to Iliya, they are allowed to come. It is not allowed to collect anything from the people of Iliya until the result of harvest cut off. Every things mentioned in that contract letter is a promise and protection from Allah SWT, protection from His Messenger (Muhammad), protection from all khalifah (the leaders) and protection from all Moslems, if they paid jizyah as compulsory. As witnesses in this case are all the companions of The Messenger Muhammad SAW: (1) Khalid ibnul Walid, (2) Amru ibnul Ash, (3) Abdurahman bin Auf, and (4) Mu’awiyah bin Abi Sufyan.

THE RESULT OF PROPHET MUHAMMAD’S ENDEAVOUR (Part VIII)

At the previous article, we have discussed about The Brave Chosen Generation for the sake of the Truth as the seventh result of Prophet Muhammad’s endeavour (dakwah). Let’s continue to discuss the next results as follow:

8. The Country of Hidayah (The guided Country)

Ibnu Sa’ad narrated from Sufyan bin Abi Auja’ said that one day Umar r.a said, “I swear by the name of Allah, I don’t know whether I am a kholifah or a king? If I were a king, it must have been a great thing!” Then someone said, “O amirul mukminin, there is a difference between khalifah and king. Khalifah only takes something (wealth) based on the truth (right position) and put it on the right position. Alhamdulillah, you are khalifah. While a king acts arbitrarily towards people, take anything away from someone and give it to other people according to his will.” After hearing that opinion, he kept silence.

Dr. Alfred J. Butler wrote about the government of Roman in Egypt, The Roman government in Egypt has no target except taking away people’s wealth to be divided to master as war loot. They never thought to make government as medium to create the welfare for people, to increase and improve their live, to educate their personnel or to improve their livelihood and working sources. The pattern of government applied in every aspects of life was only prioritizing violence and never feel mercy to the people under their authority.”
